Nepali language and Devanagari script

Key orthographic characteristics of Nepali (नेपाली) document OCR and character representation.

Single-letter conjunction

Nepali uses the single Devanagari consonant र (ra) as an independent coordinating conjunction meaning "and", unlike Hindi which uses और.

Eyelash-ra and unique conjuncts

Nepali orthography features distinctive conjunct forms such as eyelash-ra in words like गऱ्यो (garyo) alongside standard Devanagari ligatures.

Halanta and verbal inflections

Nepali verb conjugations and plural markers frequently terminate in explicit halanta, as seen in गर्छन् (garchhan), पढ्छन् (padhchhan), and छन् (chhan).

Devanagari numerals

Documents often mix native Devanagari numerals (०, १, २, ३, ४, ५, ६, ७, ८, ९) and Latin digits, both of which are transcribed accurately into output files.

Nepali PDF to Word output notes

How AlgoOCR handles Unicode Devanagari, legacy Preeti PDF text layers, and Word font selections.

Standard Unicode Devanagari Output

AlgoOCR outputs standard Unicode Devanagari text compatible with modern software and web browsers. The product outputs standard Unicode fonts such as Kokila and Mangal, and does not output legacy Preeti, Kantipur, or Kalimati font files.

Legacy Preeti Font PDF Text Layers

PDFs generated from legacy Preeti or Kantipur fonts often display garbled text when copied. AlgoOCR renders PDF pages as images and runs visual OCR on the rendered Devanagari letterforms, reconstructing clean Unicode Devanagari text when the PDF displays properly.

Word Font Options for Devanagari

Choose Auto (Default) to format Devanagari text with Kokila and English text with Calibri. Mangal is also available. Legacy typewriter fonts such as Kruti Dev 100 or DVBW-TTSurekhEN are designed for Hindi or Marathi and are not recommended for Nepali.

Which output page sizes are available?

Can I include detected images?

Yes. Include detected images is on by default. Keep it on to attempt to place detected logos, signatures, stamps, and other figures in the output, or turn it off for text and document structure only.

Does this converter support printed and handwritten Nepali text?

Printed Nepali text is supported. Handwriting recognition is available for this language and script, but results depend on legibility and scan quality. Handwriting recognition is experimental; carefully review handwritten text. Review names, numbers, and document formatting before using the result.

Which Nepali PDF files can I upload?

You can upload PDF files. This converter accepts PDF input only.

Does the converter create an editable Word document?

Yes. Each conversion creates a downloadable .docx file containing editable text and detected document structure.

Can I translate Nepali PDF text to another language Word?

Yes. Leave Translate To set to None to keep the original language, or select a supported language to translate the Word document.

Do I need to select Nepali before converting?

No. AlgoOCR detects the source text automatically. Translate To controls whether the output keeps its original language or is translated to a supported language.

Will paragraphs, lists, and tables be preserved?

AlgoOCR uses detected document structure to represent paragraphs, lists, and tables where possible. Complex layouts may still need review.

Can I convert more than one Nepali PDF?

The free demo accepts 1 file and converts 1 page. To process several files together, verify your account and use purchased Page Credits in Dashboard.

Will the Word document look exactly like the source?

Word keeps editable content and detected structure, but fixed layout, spacing, typography, and positioned elements may be represented differently.

Can I upload Nepali images on this converter?

No. This converter accepts PDF files only. For image files, use the Nepali Image to Word converter.

Does AlgoOCR convert legacy Preeti font PDFs to Unicode Word?

Yes. Because AlgoOCR rasterizes PDF pages to images and recognizes visual Devanagari glyphs through OCR rather than copying the raw PDF font stream, PDFs whose text layer contains garbled legacy Preeti characters are reconstructed as clean Unicode Devanagari text, provided the PDF displays legibly.

Which fonts are used for Nepali Word (.docx) output?

The Word export uses standard Unicode Devanagari fonts. Auto selects Kokila for Devanagari and Calibri for English text slots. Mangal is also available. AlgoOCR does not output legacy ASCII-encoded fonts such as Preeti, Kantipur, or Kalimati.

Does AlgoOCR support converting handwritten Nepali notes in PDFs?

Handwriting recognition for Nepali text is experimental and depends on scan clarity and penmanship. Standard printed documents yield consistent results, while handwritten notes should always be carefully reviewed after conversion.
